The public comment period for the 216-U-12 Crib, coinciding with the 200-UW-1 Proposed Plan, has been postponed one week.  The new start date for comment will be May 16. 

A public meeting will be held Thursday, June 2, 6:30 p.m. at the Richland Public Library.

This is a message from the Washington State Department of Ecology

The Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) announces a public comment on the 216-U-12 Crib, permit modification to be included into the Hanford Site Wide Permit.  The public comment period is scheduled for May 16 through June 30, 2005.  Public notice for the 216-U-12 Crib will coincide with the 200-UW-1 Proposed Plan comment period. 

 
The 216-U-12 crib is a Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Treatment Storage and Disposal unit It is being closed in coordination with the 200-UW-1 Operable Unit (OU). 

The 216­U­12 Crib was used to dispose of condensation generated during UO₃ (uranium­oxide) processing.   It was built in 1960 and was operational until 1988, when the pipeline was cut and capped.  The 200-UW-1 OU is a Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA or Superfund) operable unit which contains 33 waste sites located within the U Plant geographical area. The 216-U-12 crib has a disposal history that is similar to several of the 200-UW-1 OU waste sites, and is located within the 200-UW-1 OU.  

The permit modification will include a history of the unit, waste characteristics, groundwater monitoring, a sampling and analysis plan, training plan, landfill closure requirements, etc.
